Are There Differences Between Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD Regalia?

Do I Have to Order Custom Regalia?

No. Custom regalia refers to sets that are custom tailored and sewn for a specific individual. These sets are usually requested by faculty members and instructors who expect to attend many academic ceremonies. For most graduates, the souvenir regalia we regularly stock in-store is perfectly fine. Souvenir sets include everything you need to walk at Commencement and still feature unique touches that make them special to CMU (like the tartan lining on academic hoods!).

Please note that custom regalia takes 8–10 weeks to produce, and the deadline to order for the May 10, 2026 ceremony is February 23, 2026.

Can I Rent Regalia?

We only offer rental options to faculty at CMU. If you're not sure what to do with your regalia after Commencement, the gowns and caps are recyclable. Special recycle bins will be available on campus during Commencement.

Can I Order My Regalia Online?

Sure! You can order it online and have it shipped directly to you. The last day to order student regalia online is

April 2, 2026 for the May 8-10, 2026 Commencement.
